Things to do in Vila Franca do Campo

Vila Franca do Campo sits on the south coast of São Miguel, about 20 minutes east of Ponta Delgada by car, and was the island's original capital until a 1522 landslide buried much of the town and pushed the seat of power to Ponta Delgada.

Today it is a modest working town of marina, church steps and bakeries, best known for the volcanic islet just offshore: a collapsed crater rim enclosing a natural seawater pool, reachable only by short boat crossing.

That crossing and the pool itself run on a narrow season, in practice June to mid-September, and stop outright whenever the sea is too rough, so treat the islet as a bonus rather than a certainty and plan the town as a two-to-three-hour stop or an overnight base rather than a guaranteed swim day.
