Things to do in Nordeste

Nordeste is a rural municipality at the eastern tip of Sao Miguel, about a 1-hour drive (roughly 55 km) from Ponta Delgada on winding coastal roads, so plan a full day rather than a quick detour.

The draw here is a string of miradouros above steep green cliffs, notably Ponta do Sossego and Ponta da Madrugada, plus the small formal gardens and lakes of Parque das Fontes near the town centre, free to enter and open year-round in daylight hours. Fog and sudden rain showers are common on this coast even in July and August, so mornings tend to offer the clearest views.

This is not the thermal-spring circuit or the twin crater lakes visitors see elsewhere on the island: Nordeste's appeal is quieter, slower roads and viewpoints with almost no coach traffic.
