Things to do in Madalena

Madalena is the working port on Pico's west coast, and for most visitors it is a transit point rather than a destination in itself: the Atlanticoline ferry to Horta on Faial takes around 30 minutes and runs several times a day, all year, making this the most reliable inter-island link in the archipelago.

Beyond the terminal, the town's main sight is the Cachorro lava field, a stretch of black basalt shaped by past eruptions and pounded by Atlantic swell along the shoreline path. Madalena also has the widest choice of guesthouses and rental cars on Pico, which is why many people base themselves here rather than closer to the mountain or in Lajes do Pico.

It is not where the Montanha do Pico hike starts, and it has no vineyard sites of its own.
