Things to do in Faial

Faial is the Azores' historic Atlantic crossroads, built around Horta's marina roughly 30 minutes by ferry from Pico year-round, with the central Caldeira crater rim and the black, moon-like Capelinhos volcano field left by the 1957-58 eruption at the island's western tip.

Locals call it the blue island for the hydrangea hedges that line the roads in full bloom from July into August, though flowers start appearing as early as May and fade by early autumn. Faial rewards two to three days rather than a rushed stopover: fog can close in fast on the Caldeira's rim, and the drive out to Capelinhos takes longer than the map suggests.

Note this is Faial in the Azores, not the Madeira place name of the same word - different archipelago, different volcanic history entirely.
