Things to do in Caloura

Caloura is a small fishing and wine-making village on the south coast of São Miguel, about 15 minutes by car from Ponta Delgada. There is no sand beach here: the draw is a set of natural swimming pools cut into volcanic rock at Caloura's tiny marina, where sea access depends on the day's swell, plus a reputation as one of the island's quieter sunset spots.

Budget one to two hours rather than a half-day excursion, ideally arriving before early evening. The village also has a handful of vineyards planted close to the shore and a working fishing harbour with a few boats rather than a resort-style marina.

It suits a driver already touring São Miguel who wants a short, low-key stop to add onto a day built around Ponta Delgada or Sete Cidades, not a standalone outing.
