Things to do on Sao Jorge
Sao Jorge is a narrow volcanic ridge in the Azores central group, reachable by a roughly 30-minute Atlanticoline ferry from Madalena on Pico or from Horta on Faial, with the crossing running year-round as part of the Pico-Faial-Sao Jorge "Triangle".
The island's profile is a spine of highland pasture dropping in cliffs to about forty fajas, the flat coastal shelves formed by lava flows or landslides.
Its capital, Velas, and the economy running along that ridge is built on dairy cattle and PDO cheese rather than tourism infrastructure, so distances between viewpoints and villages run longer than the map suggests, often 40 minutes or more of narrow, fog-prone road. Do not confuse this island with the place of the same name on Madeira: there are no levadas here, only coastal and ridge trilhos.
